PlantMinder FAQs
Q. My products don't seem to be displayed in a basket?
A. Please make sure that you have your privacy setting to medium. In Internet Explorer this by default is set to medium. To check click Tools then Internet Options and then the Privacy Tab. Check the slider is at Medium. Any higher then the browser will block the site from working.
Q. Can I use the PlantMinder Cones in a Hanging Basket?
A. If you are planting up a Hanging Basket from new, we highly recommend installing the PlantMinder Ring. However, if your Hanging Basket is already established, you can use the Standard Cone so long as it is installed into the centre of your basket and your basket is no larger than 12 inches diameter. We do not recommend you use the PlantMinder Mini in a hanging basket because it has a small surface area and low water supply.
Q. Where are the holes in the Terracotta? How does the water get to the soil / roots?
A. All PlantMinder products are made to the same concept of Porous Terracotta. There are no holes, the water seeps through the wall of the Terracotta into the soil where the roots find the source of water, eventually wrap around the Terracotta, and take what the Plant requires.
Q. Can I install the PlantMinder cones into a pot with a new / young plant?
A. Yes. We recommend you install the Cone very close to the plant and manually water around the Cone area until your plant has shown signs of growth / development. Once you feel the plant has established roots, you may now stop manually watering. You will know when your plant has started to use the PlantMinder Cone because the water level in the Plastic Globe will steadily go down thereafter.
Q. Can I install the PlantMinder Cones into a pot with existing plants?
A. Yes. You may disturb a little root tissue when you dig a hole for the Cone, but this should not cause damage to your plant. It is a good idea to water around the edge of the PlantMinder Cone for the first 2 – 3 days after. This is to encourage the roots to gravitate towards the Cone.
Q. Will my plants be okay outdoors in hot / sunny weather without watering them manually?
A. This is one of our most commonly asked questions. It is recommended in very hot conditions to spray your plants occasionally with water to keep the petals / leaves moist and prevent wilting. You may find your plants take more water from the PlantMinder in hot conditions and one fill may not last as long as expected. If your plant(s) appears to not be getting sufficient water through a very hot period, you may have to manually water them but this situation may only occur through extreme temperatures.
Q. Will the Plastic Globes magnify sunlight and become dangerous?
A. All of the globes supplied with PlantMinder are UV filtered to prevent this. They have been laser tested to ensure that refracted sunlight is diffused when it enters the globe, even when filled with water. Any sunlight that passes through the globe should not be strong enough to cause damage to property.
Q. Can I use PlantMinder outdoors in the winter season?
A. In the Winter Season there is most likely to be a lot of moisture and rain outdoors. It is recommended that you remove an installed PlantMinder Cone from your container / basket for this period as your plants will have plenty of other water sources available. A PlantMinder Ring can remain installed as the Terracotta is isolated from the weather. In this case, simply remove the Plastic Globe and place a small cover over the Globe Locater.
Q. Can I add Plant Feed to the PlantMinder?
A. Yes. Use liquid feed only. This is important as a powder based feed will leave a residue on the internal wall of the Porous Terracotta and eliminate the porosity.
Q. How long does PlantMinder last after being installed?
A. One fill in the Plastic Globe will last up to 6 weeks – refillable. PlantMinder itself will last a lifetime as long as the Terracotta does not break.
Q. I want to re-plant my container / basket which has a PlantMinder installed. Can I use the same PlantMinder again?
A. Yes. All you need to do is remove the PlantMinder, remove any excess earth from the Terracotta, and re-install as per the supplied instructions.
Q. I have a very large plant in a container. Will I need more than 1 Standard Cone?
A. Not necessarily. Just because your plant is large, it does not mean it requires a lot of water. Some plants require a lot less than you might think. We would recommend starting with 1 Standard cone and monitor its performance. If you feel your plant is not getting enough water, simply install another PlantMinder Standard.
